The Long Island Railroad received its first charter in 1834—190 years ago! Just ten years later, the railroad’s Main Line was completed in 1844, connecting Brooklyn to Greenport and deeply transforming life on Long Island. Southampton History Museum has partnered with the Railroad Museum of Long Island to recognize these milestones with a special exhibition of objects from our collections.
On Friday, March 8, 5-7 pm there will be an opening reception and talk presented by Don Fisher, president of the Railroad Museum of Long Island, examining the history of the railroad and its revolutionary impact on Long Island’s East End. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free, but please RSVP.
